Visiting North Carolina Outer Banks
The Atlantic shoreline covers one hundred miles of beach and barrier islands also known as the North Carolina Outer Banks. Attracted by the excellent beaches and mild climate many travelers come to this area. There is only one downside, that is the threat of hurricanes. Due to the numerous shipwrecks off the coast, caused by furious storms and difficult streams, this area also has the nickname, "Graveyard of the Atlantic". Nowadays, Outer Banks vacations is a great choice for surfing and fishing enthusiasts and migrating water birds call it home for part of the year.
Natives to the area are called "bankers" and the crowds of wild horses in Outer Banks that can be seen are known as "banker ponies". These are the descendants of Spanish Mustangs that were washed on shore on the North Carolina Outer Banks hundreds of years ago after wrecks.
A lot of them are resident on Ocracoke Island, which is also well-renowned for being the home range of Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, the infamous pirate.
Another claim to renown for the region is the record-breaking flyers, the Wright Brothers. They took on an historical flight here in 1903 on a place that's today the beachfront town of Kill Devil Hills. A National memorial pays tribute to their accomplishment.
Among the most popular landmarks and attractions for visitors when going on Outer Banks vacations is the striped lighthouse at Cape Hatteras. An important project involved the lighthouse, when it was shut down in 1998 and moved 2,900 feet to another place. It re-opened in 2000 and the public could visit it once again on the summertime.
On Hatteras Island there is the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. This protected area there are reptiles, birds, amphibians and mammals in a terrain that includes salt marshes and beaches.
Migratory birds including wading birds, raptors and snow geese nest here for the winter.
Here you can also watch threatened species, such as piping plovers and peregrine falcons. It is a really popular area for nature photographers, bird watchers, kayakers and canoeists.
On Roanoke Island in the area at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, the place where the first English settlers came in into North America, history is remembered. The place is preserved in tribute to the first colonists and includes Elizabethan Gardens that present a typical garden of the time. At the outdoor Waterside Theatre you can view some productions. North Carolina Outer Banks habitants are proud of the rugged scenery and wildlife.of their region, significant maritime and historical legacy.
